Melasma

Brown to gray-brown patches on the face that occur in response to hormonal changes and UV light are known as melasma. Women are far more commonly affected than men. It typically occurs on the upper lip, cheeks, bridge of the nose, and forehead. Melasma is common during or following pregnancy and is sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy”. Treatment involves careful sun protection including daily use of a sunscreen containing Titanium and Zinc oxide such as Teton Dermatology SPF 45 daily sunscreen (reapplying every 2 hours) and wearing a brimmed hat when outside. Sun protection alone may not reverse melasma. Your dermatologist may recommend topical lightening agents or chemical peels.
