Nail Fungus
Fungal infections of the nails, or “onychomycosis” is a common condition. Symptoms are thickening, deformity, discoloration, and brittleness of the nails. Occasionally, the condition can be painful. It most commonly affects the feet but can also affect the hands. Sometimes onychomycosis can be triggered by tinea pedis, which is “athlete’s foot.” In northwest Wyoming, other conditions can mimic fungal toenail infections, such as “ski boot trauma.” Rarely, tumors of the nail bed including skin cancer can mimic fungal toenail infections. Treatments for onychomycosis are available, and include prescription topical and oral medications. Dermatologists are uniquely trained in diagnosing and treating not only diseases of the skin, but also of the hair and nails.
