Rosacea
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes persistent redness and in some cases pimples on the face. It can involve facial flushing and persistent red blood vessels. Skin thickening and enlargement around the nose may occur after many years. In some people it may cause eye irritation. Rosacea most commonly occurs in people over 30 years of age. Although women have rosacea more commonly than men, men often suffer more severe forms.
What causes rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. It is thought to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Harsh weather, extremes in temperature, and high altitude sun exposure are likely contributing factors. Rosacea is not contagious. Many people report that their rosacea flares up after exposure to certain triggers. Some common rosacea triggers include exposure to very cold or hot temperatures, sun exposure, emotional stress, spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol consumption.
What are the treatment options?
Treatment can be effective in controlling rosacea. Rosacea treatments include topical medications, oral anti-inflammatory medications, lifestyle modifications, and laser or light therapies. Although there is no cure for rosacea, early diagnosis and treatment can control symptoms and stop rosacea from progressing.
