Skin Infections and Infestations

The skin, hair, and nails are prone to several different types of infections and infestations.  Infestations include scabies and head lice. These need to be diagnosed and treated promptly to prevent transmission and spread. “Pyoderma” refers to bacterial infections of the skin.  Bacterial infections can range from uncomplicated, easily treatable causes such as infected bug bites and impetigo to severe, life threatening causes such as necrotizing fasciitis.   Fungal infections of the skin include ringworm, toenail fungus, “jock itch,” and “athletes’s foot.” Viruses are also a very common causes of skin infections.  Some examples are: warts, molluscum, herpes simplex (cold sores) and herpes zoster (shingles). Most viral infections are not considered serious, but should be treated to avoid transmission and spread.  Some viral infections, such as herpes simplex in a pregnant woman or child, or herpes zoster at any age, can cause serious, permanent complications if not diagnosed and treated promptly.  Dermatologists are uniquely trained and qualified to determine if a skin condition is caused by an infection, to identify the infecting organism, and develop and appropriate treatment plan.
